Little Boxes

May 20, 2009

While browsing online for something else, I came across “Little Boxes,” a song popularized by Pete Seeger in the 1960s (and repopularized by Linkin Park as the theme song for “Weeds”).

I don’t think I need to provide any commentary. The song speaks for itself.

Here are the lyrics. And here’s how it sounds as sung by its author, Malvina Reynolds.

1. Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky,
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes, all the same.
There’s a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.2. And the people in the houses
All went to the university,
And they all were put in boxes,
And they came out all the same.
And there’s doctors and there’s lawyers
And business executives,
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.
  3. And they all play on the golf-course,
And drink their Martinis dry,
And they all have pretty children,
And the children go to school.
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university,
Whey they are put in boxes
And they all come out the same.4. And the boys go into business,
And marry, and raise a family,
Put in boxes made of ticky-tacky,
And they all look just the same.
There’s a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.
